A bike that gets ridden through a wet January is not usually a different bike from the one that sits in the garage. It is the same bike with fenders that reach far enough down, a rack that carries the load without swaying, and a drivetrain someone cleaned in November. The parts that decide this are cheap relative to the frame, but several of them have to be designed in at purchase, and a careful reader checks for them before the money moves rather than after. Here is what that check looks like, in the order it usually matters.
1. Count the eyelets, then look at where they sit
Most flat-bar bikes sold as hybrids advertise rack and fender mounts, and most of them have some. The useful question is how many and where. A rear dropout with two separate threaded holes, one for the rack stay and one for the fender stay, is a different proposition from a single hole that both parts have to share with a spacer and a longer bolt. Check the seatstay bridge and the fork crown too, since a fender that has nothing solid to hang from at the top will rattle no matter how carefully the stays are set. Frames with a bolt-on flat mount above the tire are the easy case.
2. Measure the clearance with the tires you intend to run
Fender clearance is not a number the spec sheet gives you honestly, because it depends on the tire fitted. A 38mm tire that clears the chainstays with a finger's width to spare will not take a full fender without rubbing, and the rub only appears once grit packs in behind the mudflap. Slide a folded index card between tire and frame at the tightest point, usually the chainstay bridge or the fork crown, and see whether roughly ten millimeters of daylight exists. If it does not, you are choosing between a narrower tire and a clip-on fender that stops short of the bottom bracket.
3. Read the rack's rated load, not the shop's assurance
Rear racks carry a stamped or printed weight rating, commonly somewhere between forty and eighty pounds, and that rating assumes the rack is bolted to a frame designed to take it. A rack clamped to a seatpost is a different object with a much lower limit, generally suitable for a change of clothes and a lunch and not much more. If groceries are the point of the bike, look for four-point mounting, tubular steel or thick aluminum stays, and a top platform wide enough that a pannier does not swing into your heel. The Consumer Product Safety Commission oversees bicycle equipment requirements in the United States, including reflectors, which matters more once the commute starts and ends in the dark.
4. Learn what salt and grit do to a chain
Wet-weather riding wears a chain several times faster than dry riding, because road grit turns lubricant into grinding paste inside the rollers. A chain checker gauge is inexpensive and tells you in five seconds whether the chain has stretched past the point where it starts eating the cassette. Checking monthly through the winter, wiping the chain after wet rides, and relubricating with a wet-formula lube costs a few minutes and postpones a much larger bill. Riders who ignore this replace a chain, a cassette and sometimes a chainring together, when a chain alone would have done.
5. Watch the brake pads and the rim or rotor under them
Rim brake pads on a wet commute can go from new to metal in a single season, and the wear that costs real money is to the rim wall, not the pad. Look for the wear indicator groove on the braking surface, and replace pads while rubber remains above the slot. Disc pads last longer and spare the rims entirely, but rotors thin out too, and the minimum thickness is usually printed on the rotor itself. Either way, the check takes a minute with the wheel spinning and a flashlight.
6. Decide what you will pay someone else to do
Chain cleaning, pad swaps, tire changes and cable tension are all learnable from a stand, a hex key set and an afternoon. Wheel truing, bottom bracket service, hydraulic bleeds and headset work reward a shop with the right tools. A realistic yearly budget for a commuter ridden year-round covers a chain or two, one set of pads, a tire, cables or a bleed, and one shop tune, and it is small enough that people who track it usually keep riding.
The checks above take perhaps twenty minutes in a shop and cost nothing. What they buy is the difference between a bike you use in February and one you apologize to.
